Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine
At Asan Medical Center, the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine prioritizes the safety of patients in the operating rooms and intensive care units, while providing specialized care for acute and chronic pain through the Pain Clinic. Our scope spans general and regional anesthesia, sedation for various medical and surgical procedures and tests, and postoperative pain management, playing a central role in patient safety and quality of life.
Humanity has long striven to overcome pain caused by disease and trauma. Even ancient records describe attempts to relieve pain, and the episode of Queen Victoria opting for painless childbirth in the 19th century is remembered as a social turning point in pain management. In modern medicine, anesthesiology not only makes surgical treatment possible but also opens new horizons in pain care, greatly contributing to improvements in quality of life.
Launched with the hospital’s opening in 1989, our department has achieved distinctive progress in Korea and abroad. We successfully performed Korea’s first anesthesia for heart transplantation in 1992 and the first anesthesia for living-donor related partial liver transplantation in 1994, opening a new era in transplant anesthesia. In 1995, we established the Pain Clinic to provide systematic pain treatment, and in 1996, we began operating the Day Surgery Center to build a patient-centered care system. In 2014, we opened the Pediatric Sedation Clinic to deliver safe procedural sedation for children during outpatient procedures and tests, continually expanding our clinical services. Today, we operate 68 operating rooms and safely provide anesthesia for more than 60,000 surgeries each year.
Our department has proactively incorporated the latest clinical guidelines and international trends, and our research achievements now lead not only in Korea but also on the global stage. Across our subspecialties, including transplant anesthesia, cardiothoracic and vascular anesthesia, anesthetic pharmacology, regional anesthesia, and pain medicine, we have consistently published results in international journals through numerous clinical studies and innovative initiatives.
We have also established academic leadership in education and training. In addition to providing structured programs for residents and fellows, we operate comprehensive training courses for international medical professionals, nurturing the next generation of specialists. Furthermore, based on a robust multidisciplinary collaboration system, we work closely with various departments to deliver outstanding outcomes even in the care of complex and high-risk patients.

Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia
The Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia Section is dedicated to improving patient outcomes in the field of cardiothoracic anesthesia through excellence in clinical care, education, and research.
Anesthetic Pharmacology
The Anesthetic Pharmacology Section focuses on population pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic analysis using nonlinear mixed effects modeling (NONMEM) and on invasive controlled desaturation study as its core academic foundations.
Transplant Anesthesia
Asan Medical Center performed Korea’s first heart and pancreas transplantations in 1992 and later pioneered living-donor liver transplantation in 1994, becoming a national leader in complex organ transplantation.
Regional Anesthesia
Regional anesthesia is a technique that selectively blocks sensation in specific parts of the body, allowing patients to remain conscious during surgery while maintaining stable spontaneous respiration and cardiovascular function.
Pain Clinic
The Pain Clinic at Asan Medical Center provides comprehensive and precise care for patients with acute and chronic pain.
